Christian Bédard’s My Little Butterball (an original Canadian script and score) is an engaging, accessible and heart-warming one-woman comedy exploring a young woman’s lifelong struggle with issues of weight and self-esteem. The play was originally written in French in 1986, and toured Quebec and France extensively, but has had little exposure in English speaking Canada. In our image obsessed society, youth face ever increasing pressure to conform to socially crippling stereotypes of body image and the media-defined body ideal, which affects their health, self-esteem, and coping mechanisms. Since 1986, the themes of this musical seems only to have become more relevant, as the troubling phenomenon of an increasingly body conscious society continues to affect even more youth, at an even earlier age.
